Alcoholism and drug addiction are both chronic but treatable diseases that include their continued use despite repeated alcohol or drug related problems such as, negative health affects, loss of job, or problems with law enforcement.

Alcoholism and drug addiction include four symptoms:

Craving- A strong need or compulsion to drink or use drugs.

Impaired Control-The inability to limit one's drinking or drug consumption on any given occasion.

Physical Dependence-Withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, shakiness, or anxiety when alcohol or drug use is stopped.

Tolerance-The need for increasing amounts of alcohol or drugs in order to feel its effects. When defining alcoholism and drug addiction it is important to know that not all four of the above symptoms need be present at the same time to indicate a problem with alcohol or drugs.
